Flip Burger Boutique Review

Our first restaurant review! Special thanks to Katriesa for writing this for the blog.
By Katriesa Crummie

Since hearing about the opening of a second location of Flip Burger Boutique in Birmingham, Alabama, I decided that I needed to try out a "flipped" burger in its original location, Atlanta, Georgia.

From the exterior, you can tell that any food you are about to eat will be innovative, fun, and modern. The decor inside and out consists of metal, concrete flooring, and white with splashes of red. My dining partner and I arrived on a Tuesday afternoon right before lunch and already the parking lot was filling fast. Once we walked in, however, seating was ample and plenty (although one of the waiters informed us that the Birmingham location is larger and features more seating). We chose seats at the bar although there are other options, ranging from chic white leather booths reminiscent of the booths at Shout!, to long white high tables with 6 metal chairs to a table. This was no doubt a effort at encouraging fellowship among patrons that would otherwise remain anonymous.

Service was fast, although our waitress did not seem to be particularly interested in serving us at times. I ordered a gyro burger while my partner ordered a shrimp po boyger. The gyro burger featured a lamb patty topped with slivers of lamb shank and dressed with lettuce, tomato, pickeled cucumbers and a divine tzayziki. The shrimp po boyger consisted of a shirmp patty topped with lettuce, tomato, fried lemon and dressed with Tabasco sauce and mayo season with Old Bay. The menu features other unusual, although appetizing options, such as a steak tartare burger (for the adventurous) or a southern burger featuring a country fried beef patty (for those wanting to stick closer to home).

My partner and I split an order of small fries, which was just enough for both of our large appetites. The fires were hand cut and serve in a bowl that reminded me of a gravy bowl. Complementary dips included ketchup and Flip Burger's smoked mayo, which nearly made me go off my diet of "no mayo" completely. Eating the dip almost makes you forget that you're consuming 20-50 per dip with each fry.

The gyro burger was exactly what I imagined it would be, with a medium-cooked lamb patty topped with the lightly chilled shaved shank. The tzatziki never overpowered, just simply complimented. The lettuce, tomato, and bun only served to remind me that I was eating a burger and could thus be a bit messy in my performance. The pickled cucumbers (mixed with a pinch of dill), although good, did not add or take away from the burger and their presence on the burger would not have been missed.

Although we did not order one, Flip Burger also does to shakes what they do to hamburgers. The menu features foie gras, nutella and burnt marshmallow, and Krispy Kreme doughnut-flavored milkshakes, all made with liquid nitrogen to keep the shakes at the a premium shake- consuming temperature longer.

My bill came out to be a little over ten dollars, which was less than I expected for such a spectacular introduction to the concept of "flipped" burgers. Most of the burgers stay in that range lunch or dinner, although rarities such as the A5, a Kobe beef burger are a little more expensive. The foie gras shake will also set you back a few bills if you dare to experience that unique taste. You can be sure that I will soon check out the Birmingham location, and that I will workout extra hard the day of to get a milkshake and extra smoked mayo.
